“Don’t let the fear control you!”
“Don’t let the fear control you,” those were the words I heard our 6 year old say to his older brother today when he was scared to do a running dive into the pool. I waited and listened again as he repeated it. I then watched as his big brother did a running dive into the pool and as he swam to the surface my youngest was cheering and clapping shouting “well done George!”
I was impressed and also a little confused, so I asked where he had heard this. He replied candidly, “Ninjago.” He then proceeded to tell me the story around it and that the father in the programme says it to his son when facing things he may be afraid of.
I watched on as the boys played together, laughed, enjoyed each others company until the almost inevitable arguments pursued, the first being that one of them had stolen the other ones towel. Ah the joys of boys!
Anyway, since he said those words I have not been able to stop thinking about it and he is absolutely right “ don’t let the fear control you!” Everybody has dreams and fears and sometimes we allow the fear of the unknown to stop us from realising those dreams. Of course things can go wrong; things can change; but who knows what will happen, so why not take that risk and do that running dive – at least attempt to achieve something.
It has been 2 years since we moved to France. A huge step and a huge change for us all as a family. Not just for us but also for the family and friends that we were so used to seeing everyday. People we meet here always ask why did you do it? The simple answer is we fancied a change – so why not? We are in a lucky position that due to my sailors job we do not need to be located anywhere specific so a move, with employment is easy, but the life changes were not simple and they were very scary at times – they still are.
I do miss friends and family enormously but we, as a family have made some amazing friends here, of all nationalities and everybody seems to have the same outlook on life – if you want to do something, then try it. The only person losing out if you don’t try is you.
24 months ago, the children spoke no French. They are now fluent. We have settled and immersed ourselves into local living. I have been helping to teach the swimming lessons for the local school (in French) because if I hadn’t volunteered then the children would not swim. I have started a teaching english course as a foreign language and already have friends and families asking for private tuition for the kids. We have a partially renovated property, no bedrooms just upstairs in sitting room and playroom but we do have a pool. My sailor still goes away for 2 months at a time and it is difficult for him and for me for different reasons but this is our life. We only get one chance to live it and I am determined to live it to the full.
People are now asking, “what about brexit?” and I respond with: – “ what about it? “ what can we do now to change anything. The news, which I avoid as much as possible, and social media are forever going on and on about it. I know a number of people who voted for brexit and have now changed their minds, but really, in all honesty what is done is done. There is no going back. “How will it affect us?” God, only knows. But, I can say one thing I am not willing to sit around spending my time worrying or anticipating what may happen. Whatever will happen, will happen. I am a tiny cog in a wheel so no matter what i do or say it wont change anything. What is the point in stressing about it. Things change – deal with it!
Everyone has a dream and a fear that stops that dream from happening. I still have loads of things I want to do with my life and loads of things I want my children to realise they can do with their lives. I do not want fear to ever stop that. I want the boys to feel that the world is actually a pretty small place, everyone deserves a place in it and everyone deserves to see it, learn from it and hopefully appreciate it.
My writing is normally far more cheery and day to day stuff but the words “don’t let the fear control you” really got to me. Whatever it is that you may want, need or dream of – nothing is impossible. Just do it and “Don’t let the fear control you!”
